Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the Chase Orbital payment gateway?

The Chase Orbital payment gateway is the online payment gateway from Chase Payment Solutions, the merchant services business formerly called Chase Paymentech. Orbital connects your website, shopping cart, billing platform or virtual terminal to your Chase merchant account so you can accept card, eCheck and digital wallet payments online and over the phone.

  • Is Chase Paymentech the same as Chase Payment Solutions?

Yes. Chase Payment Solutions is the 2022 rebrand of Chase Paymentech, and Chase merchant services are still provided by Paymentech, LLC and other JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. subsidiaries. Paymentech launched the Orbital Gateway in 2001, which is why platforms such as WooCommerce, Zuora and Recurly still label their Orbital integrations with the older Paymentech name.

  • Is Chase Orbital a merchant account or a payment gateway?

Chase Orbital is a payment gateway, not a merchant account. To use it, you need an approved Chase merchant account. Orbital is only available to Chase merchants, so businesses that process with another company need to open a Chase merchant account first.

  • What payment methods does Chase Orbital support?

Chase Orbital supports credit, debit, prepaid and gift cards, ACH and eCheck payments, and the Apple Pay, Google Pay and Paze digital wallets. Available methods vary by integration and by what Chase enables on your account. Zuora’s current Chase Orbital connector, for example, lists all of these methods, and BigCommerce supports cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

  • Can I accept payments through my website with Chase Orbital?

Yes. Chase Orbital supports website payments two ways: Orbital Hosted Payment Pages, where customers enter card details on a Chase-hosted form, or a custom checkout built on the Orbital web service API. Platform plugins use the same options. The WooCommerce extension, for example, offers an iframe hosted pay page and requires an SSL certificate on your site.

  • Does Chase Orbital integrate with eCommerce platforms and business software?

Yes. Chase Orbital connects to WooCommerce through an official extension and to BigCommerce through a built-in Chase connection that requires linking your Chase Merchant ID to BigCommerce Submitter ID 299429. Billing platforms Zuora and Recurly also support Orbital, though Recurly works only with Chase accounts on the Salem (Stratus) platform. J.P. Morgan Chase built an Orbital connector for Optimizely B2B Commerce Cloud.

  • Does Chase Orbital include a virtual terminal?

Yes. The Orbital Virtual Terminal is a web-based tool that lets authorized users key in payments from a browser. It supports card-not-present payments such as phone and mail orders. Chase says it normally activates the Virtual Terminal within 48 hours after your merchant account is set up. Each user gets a unique login with full or limited access, and transaction history is kept for six months.

  • Can Chase Orbital process recurring payments?

Yes. Chase Orbital Managed Billing works with the Profile Management add-on and lets you charge saved customers on a recurring, installment or delayed schedule for subscriptions, memberships and service plans. Recurring payments can repeat by day, week or month.

  • Can Chase Orbital store customer payment methods?

Yes. Chase Orbital Customer Profile Management stores customer payment details on Chase systems as tokens, so you can charge repeat and recurring purchases without keeping full card numbers in your own software. Platforms rely on the same feature: BigCommerce stored cards require Profile Management to be enabled on your Chase account.

  • What are Orbital Hosted Payment Pages?

Orbital Hosted Payment Pages are checkout forms hosted by Chase. Your customer enters card details on the Chase form, so sensitive card data stays with Chase instead of on your servers. The page can match the look of your website.

  • What is Safetech tokenization?

Safetech tokenization replaces card numbers with secure tokens. You can process transactions with tokens through the API and in the Orbital Virtual Terminal, which reduces the card data your business handles.

  • Does Chase Orbital support Level II and Level III data?

Yes. You can pass Level II and Level III data for purchasing card transactions through supported integrations, and the Virtual Terminal supports Level III transactions. B2B businesses often use this data for qualified card transactions.

  • Can I use Chase Orbital with a different processor?

No. Chase Orbital works only with Chase payment processing, so you need a Chase merchant account to use it. Platform connections reflect this: BigCommerce and Recurly both require credentials issued by Chase. If you want to keep your current processor, a processor-agnostic gateway such as NMI or Authorize.net is the usual route.

  • What is the difference between Chase Orbital and Authorize.net?

The main difference is processor choice. Chase Orbital works only with a Chase merchant account, while the Authorize.net Payment Gateway Only plan connects to an existing merchant account. Authorize.net also sells an All-in-One plan with a merchant account. AllayPay offers Authorize.net directly.

  • Does Chase Orbital support ACH and eCheck payments?

Yes. Chase Orbital supports ACH and eCheck bank account payments once Chase approves them on your merchant account. Zuora’s Chase Orbital connector supports ACH payments, and the WooCommerce extension accepts both credit cards and eChecks.

  • What fraud prevention tools does Chase Orbital provide?

Chase Orbital includes Safetech fraud tools with real-time risk scoring, geolocation and order checks. The Virtual Terminal adds Address Verification (AVS), CVV2 checks, CID checks for American Express and account verification, which checks a card without affecting available credit. Zuora’s Chase Orbital connector also supports 3D Secure 2.0 authentication.

  • Is Chase Orbital PCI compliant?

Chase Orbital includes tools that support PCI compliance, but your business keeps its own PCI obligations. Hosted Payment Pages and Customer Profile Management keep card data off your servers, which can reduce your PCI scope. According to the WooCommerce extension documentation, Chase also requires quarterly PCI scans for merchants accepting credit cards through Chase.

  • Can Chase Orbital help reduce failed recurring payments?

Yes. Chase Orbital Account Updater refreshes eligible stored card details when a card is replaced or expires, which helps prevent recurring billing failures. Chase lists Visa, Mastercard and Discover as the card networks it pulls updates from. Account Updater only changes card details, so it cannot fix a decline for insufficient funds.

  • Can I issue refunds and void transactions through Chase Orbital?

Yes. Chase Orbital supports refunds, voids, captures and authorization-only transactions through the Virtual Terminal or supported API integrations. Voids work only on transactions still in the open batch; once a batch settles, you issue a refund instead. Chase does not accept partial voids, according to the WooCommerce extension documentation.

  • Does Chase Orbital provide APIs and developer testing?

Yes. Chase Orbital offers a web service API with separate test and production credentials. Chase issues test credentials for development, and you must complete the Orbital certification process with them before you receive production credentials. Test and production credentials are not interchangeable, so production credentials will not work in the test environment.

  • Is Chase Orbital suitable for enterprise payment processing?

Yes. Chase Orbital supports enterprise needs such as Level II and Level III data, customer profiles, recurring billing and Safetech fraud tools, plus connections to Oracle and Optimizely B2B Commerce Cloud. J.P. Morgan Payments, which serves larger businesses, refers to the same product as J.P. Morgan’s Orbital Gateway.

  • Can high-risk merchants use the Chase Orbital payment gateway?

Chase Payment Solutions decides whether a high-risk business can use Chase Orbital, because Orbital only runs on an approved Chase merchant account. Chase does not publish a list of high-risk industries it accepts, so the answer comes only from Chase underwriting. AllayPay works with high-risk merchants and can offer other gateways if Chase is not an option.

  • What is a good alternative to Chase Orbital for high-risk merchants?

A high-risk merchant account paired with a processor-agnostic gateway is the usual alternative to Chase Orbital. AllayPay offers the NMI, Authorize.net and Fluid Pay gateways for industries such as CBD and Delta 8, nutraceuticals, vape, firearms and travel.

  • How much does the Chase Orbital payment gateway cost?

Chase lists Orbital Virtual Terminal pricing at 3.5% plus 10 cents per keyed-in transaction and a monthly fee from $9.95, with custom pricing available, including lower rates on high-ticket sales. For API and eCommerce connections, Chase quotes pricing based on your merchant account, volume and enabled features, and gateway, ACH and optional service fees may apply.

  • Can AllayPay® set up Chase Orbital for my business?

No. AllayPay cannot place a merchant on Chase Orbital, because Orbital only works with a Chase merchant account and AllayPay is a registered ISO/MSP of Fifth Third Bank, N.A., not a Chase reseller. AllayPay can help you compare Chase with other options. Merchant accounts set up through AllayPay connect through the Authorize.net, NMI or Fluid Pay gateways, with a single point of contact for support.

  • How do I get started with AllayPay® instead of Chase Orbital?

Getting started with AllayPay begins with a free quote. AllayPay reviews your industry, website, monthly volume, average ticket and checkout setup, then sets up a merchant account and connects NMI, Authorize.net or Fluid Pay to your website, virtual terminal or billing platform. AllayPay offers same-day approvals for many businesses.
